Objective / Purpose:

The Research Strategy and Operations function is responsible for integrating scientific acumen with business analytics and processes to deliver clear business plans, operational excellence and portfolio progression for the Takeda Research pipeline.

The Head of Research Data Strategy is the member of the Research Strategy & Operations Leadership Team responsible for leading the development and implementation of data strategies to drive research excellence and innovation. This role provides strategic direction, overseeing data management and analytics, data governance, and infrastructure to ensure effective utilization of data to support research priorities.

The Head of Research Data Strategy is tasked with leading a team to development and implementation of forward-thinking digital initiatives within the research pipeline through data democratization and business intelligence. They set the vision for embedding Takeda's technology stack and applying Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) to enhance research capabilities. By integrating these responsibilities, the Head of Research Data Strategy plays a crucial role in enhancing decision-making, increasing productivity, and ensuring the effective ways of working to drive research advancements.

Accountabilities:

  • Architect a strategic plan for digital transformation that aligns with Takeda's overarching objectives, executing this plan in close collaboration with the Data Science Institute (DSI), key functions stakeholders, and external partners.

  • Interface with Portfolio, Program Management, Operations Management, and research teams to define current and future state information flow and critical data reporting

  • Coordinate efforts to leverage domain-specific expertise from leading universities and industry leaders to tackle distinct challenges within pharmaceutical research.

  • Foster a collaborative innovation ecosystem by partnering with top-tier academic institutions and forward-thinking companies.

  • Drives operational effectiveness and scalability through of digital transformation to ensure cost-efficiency and a robust return on investment.

  • Foster the implementation of a unified data management strategy, which prioritizes standardization, deduplication, and fairness.

  • Champion the creation of a user-friendly, one-click access system that provides comprehensive visibility and accessibility to all relevant data.

  • Drive innovation in how data is used within Takeda, leveraging AI/ML to transform data into actionable insights.

  • Promote the use of standardized, domain-agnostic data to facilitate quick integration from diverse sources, minimizing time spent on data processing.

  • Reorganize data infrastructure from interoperable to domain-focused to alleviate operational bottlenecks and simplify system maintenance.

  • Transition to real-time data streaming from batch processing, improving resource allocation visibility and reducing storage costs for better budget management.

  • Identify opportunities to leverage data for research innovation, decision-making, and insights generation.

  • Define data governance framework, polices, and standards to ensure data quality, integrity, and security.

Education & Competencies :

  • 15+ years of experience in data strategy, management, and analytics within the pharmaceutical industry, including a minimum of 10 years focused on product management, people management, and developing comprehensive digital solutions and digital technologies

  • Strong expertise developing and implementing data governance frameworks, data management practices, and advanced analytics techniques.

  • Extensive background in strategic development of big data solutions, data harmonization, and standardization, with expertise in ontology-guided data integration.

  • Comprehensive experience with diverse data types including clinical, genomics, trial manufacturing, instruments, and CRO data integration.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to provide strategic direction and drive results.

  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Demonstrated expertise in AI/ML and strategic insights into the application and impact of new-generation artificial intelligence technologies.

  • In-depth understanding of data privacy regulations and ethical standards in pharmaceutical research.

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D., M.S., or equivalent) in scientific or data-related discipline preferred

U.S. Base Salary Range:

$205,100.00 - $322,300.00

The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/ or long-term incentives. U.S. based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others. U.S. based employees are also eligible to receive, per calendar year, up to 80 hours of sick time, and new hires are eligible to accrue up to 120 hours of paid vacation.
